The Coordination Centre for Clinical Trials in Leipzig (also known as KKS according to the German acronym) was founded in October 1999 as an independent office of the medical faculty of the University of Leipzig and the University Clinic of Leipzig AöR (UKL). The KKS is one of 14 Clinical Trial Coordination Centers associated with German University system as well as the University Hospitals and Clinics (BMBF - German acronym) and as such, is funded by the government and charged with the following tasks:
In cooperation with university research centers, and together with experienced clinics and hospitals as well as the pharmaceutical and biomedical industries, the Clinical Trial Centers in Germany are in the process of accelerating the time for basic medical research to be applied in clinical practice.
The KKS as well as the Site Management Organisation (SMO) is part of the Clinical Trial Centre Leipzig (according to the German acronym: ZKS Leipzig). Organizationally and technically, the KKS is linked to the Leipzig University Institute for Medical Informatics, Statistics and Epidemiology (IMISE).
